Professor Vishwanath Receives Best Paper Award Dr. Sriram Vishwanath, ECE and WNCG Assistant Professor, received the 2005 IEEE Joint IT/Comsoc Best Paper Award this year. This award recognizes one or two outstanding papers that address both communications and information theory. Any paper appearing in a IEEE Communications Society or Information Theory Society publication during the year 2004 was eligible for the 2005 award. This year Dr. Vishwanath’s paper is the only paper receiving the award. This award is for a paper titled “The Duality of Gaussian Multiple-Access and Broadcast Channels," appearing in the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory in May 2004. This work was done jointly with Prof. Nihar Jindal at The University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN and Dr. Andrea Goldsmith, Stanford University, CA. This paper identifies a fundamental duality relationship between the uplink and downlink multi-user communications systems – which, in recent years, has proven to be of both theoretical and practical value. Dr. Vishwanath will be traveling to Adelaide, Australia in August of 2005 to receive the award at the International Symposium on Information Theory.
