Professor Bill Bard Receives Outstanding Faculty Award for UT's Executive Software Engineering Program

WNCG Professor Bill Bard has received the 2004 Outstanding Faculty award for UT's Executive Software Engineering Program. The Executive Software Engineering Program is an outreach of UT's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and is designed for working individuals to give them the opportunity to earn an advanced degree in the field of software engineering. The main goal of the program is to enhance technical and management skills to give students the ability to design robust and advanced software systems.

William C. Bard is a Senior Lecturer with the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. He is a Professional Engineer with extensive design, operation, and management experience in telecommunications and networking. He attended the University of Chicago and was awarded the Bachelor of Science degree, with majors in physics and chemistry, in 1966. While attending graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin, he studied physical chemistry and was awarded the Master of Arts in Computer Sciences in 1969 and the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1976.

He has been employed continuously by the University of Texas since 1966 in positions including teaching assistant, lead operating system development specialist, digital system design engineer, manager of computer maintenance, and associate director for technical affairs. At present, he is jointly the Deputy Director of the Computation Center and the Director of the UT System Office of Telecommunication Services, along with his teaching and research activities in WNCG. In these UT System roles, he is responsible for computer networking at UT Austin and the UT System-wide voice, video, and computer network. These responsibilities include the statewide Texas Higher Education network (THEnet) and the state's K-12 network, the Texas Education Network (TENET).

Bill is a member of the IEEE, ACM, and Internet Society. He has served as the chair of the Greater Austin Area Telecommunications network since 1997. In addition to his WNCG affiliation, he is also the associate director of UT's Center for Telecommunications and Digital Signal Processing Research. His avocations include triathloning and information system security.
