Choo Wins URSI Student Paper Competition

Hosung Choo, a WNCG doctoral student, won first place in the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) Student Prize Paper Competition. He presented the paper, titled "Design of electrically small wire antennas using a Pareto genetic algorithm," at the 2003 IEEE International Antennas and Propagation Symposium and URSI North American Radio Science Meeting in Columbus, Ohio, June 22-27, 2003. He received his first place award and a $1000 prize at the awards banquet.

The paper describes a design technique based on the Pareto genetic algorithm to design very small antennas (less than four hundredths of a wavelength). The resulting designs have optimized performance in bandwidth and efficiency, and can potentially be deployed for wireless handheld devices or military HF radios. A provisional patent based on this concept was filed on June 12, 2003.

Choo's faculty advisor is WNCG Electrical Engineering professor Dr. Hao Ling.
