WNCG Faculty Member’s Papers Among Most Cited

Two articles by Professor Alan C. Bovik, a faculty member of the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department and WNCG member have been the most-cited papers in their respective journals.

The IEEE Transactions on Image Processing article "Image Quality Assessment: From Error Visibility to Structural Similarity" is the most cited paper since April 2004 when it appeared and has more than 50% more citations than the next most-cited paper.

The IEEE Signal Processing Letters article, "A Universal Image Quality Index" is the most-cited paper since 2000.

"Image Quality Assessment (IQA) and Video Quality Assessment (VQA) are issues of considerable recent importance owing to the ubiquitous communication of visual data via wireless and the internet,” said Bovik. “We are gratified by the attention our work is receiving, since a fundamental approach to this problem has been needed for a long time.

“Our results, as measured by comparison with human studies, which are the only meaningful standard, have materially advanced the field more than the previous 35 years of research on the topic. We are devoting our current efforts towards video motion models for improved VQA, and for developing our IQA and VQA metrics as design criteria for broad suites of applications in image and video processing and communication."
