Rappaport Honored with Stuart Meyer award

At the Fall IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference in Dallas, TX, last week, Prof. Ted Rappaport was presented the Stuart Meyer Memorial award, the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society's highest recognition. The award, which consists of a plaque and a $2500 prize, honors the life and career of Stuart Meyer, a wireless pioneer whose career spanned 5 decades. Meyer's technical achievements and executive talents helped shape the early wireless industry at Dumont Radio Corporation, Link Radio Corp., Hammarlund, and Ericsson.

Mr. Meyer was a beloved member of the technical community, and he was a leader in early trunked radio systems for land mobile radio, the predecessor to today's modern cellular telephone infrastructure. Stu also was an active member of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society, and was a leader and long-standing member of the Radio Club of America, the world's oldest radio society. Mr. Meyer, who held amateur (or "ham") radio callsign W2GHK, was also known internationally for his efforts to foster long-distance, or "DX", ham radio communication activities, through his creation and sponsorship of the "DX-p edition of the month" program that provided support for ham radio operators to travel to rare, far away islands to temporarily put them "on the air" for the world ham community to contact. Mr. Meyer passed away in 1994. The Stuart Meyer Memorial Award is sponsor ed by IEEE and by Ericsson.
