WNCG advances relationship with Korean Universities, Businesses

Five WNCG faculty visited Korea May 19 -20, 2005 in order to raise WNCG's profile in one of the most important countries in leading edge wireless technology. The visit was initiated by Dr. Song Chong of the prestigious Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), one of Korea's premier universities and centers of research. The highlight of the visit was a two day KAIST-WNCG wireless workshop held in the KAIST department of electrical and computer engineering in Dajeon, Korea, in which in-depth lectures were given by both KAIST and WNCG professors on their latest research results. In addition to excellent technical interactions, the KAIST faculty proved to be incomparable hosts and introduced their visitors to the splendors of Korean cuisine and the Korean countryside.

The five WNCG participants -- Drs. Andrews, de Veciana, Heath, Shakkottai, and Vishwanath -- made the most of their trip to Korea by visiting a number of leading technology companies such as Samsung Electronics, LG, Samsung Advanded Institute of Technology, and SOLiD Technologies, as well as attending the IEEE International Conference on Communications. The UT Austin Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has a long history of strong ties with Korea, including dozens of alumni who are now leaders in Korea's booming high tech industry and professors at Korean universities. The WNCG faculty still aren't sure how to say "Hook 'em Horns" in Korean, but there are plenty of Koreans who undoubtedly do.
